October 16, 2025A new Statistics Canada Report entitled “Directly measured physical activity and sedentary time in Canada: New results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey, 2022 to 2024” was recently published by Statistics Canada, a summary and citation are included below.
Summary
According to Statistics Canada’s 2022-24 Canadian Health Measures Survey, adults in Canada spent an average of 9.3 hours per day being sedentary. Only 42% of adults met the national guideline of no more than 9 hours of sedentary time daily. Women were more likely than men to meet this guideline (49% vs. 35%). Children and youth also spent much of their day sedentary. On average, preschoolers were sedentary for 6.6 hours per day, children for 7.6 hours, and youth for 10.6 hours. Although there is no official guideline for total sedentary time among young people, screen time is a concern. Only 62% of children and 28% of youth met the recommendation of no more than 2 hours of recreational screen time per day.
